Short Essay for Soft Quarterly Spring 2022
Freelance, May
In this neoliberal era, we seem to have replaced ethics of community and care with individualised therapy and coping strategies. I believe this is, ironically, a detriment to our collective wellbeing, and that we should instead strive to build emotional infrastructures that help us deal with and prepare for the inevitability of pain.
This essay attempts to point out the humanity of pain, and how pathologizing someone's feelings can sometimes shift our collective responsibility of care onto the individual, rather than the support systems around them that we so desperately need to rebuild.
